Managed Backups Service Components

Daily Review

Backups and replication jobs are reviewed daily.  In the event of a backup failure, the backup job will be investigated and rerun.

Managed Restores

File, full image and replication restores are managed by Extraordinary.  A request is logged to the service desk and engineers who understand the customer environment restore the required data.

Scheduled Testing

Restores from backups are tested in accordance with an agreed schedule. The aim of the scheduled testing is to provide tangible proof that the backup process is working and that restores can easily be done.

Transparency

Daily backup summaries are automatically generated and sent to our customers. At the end of the month a Backup/Replication Health report is generated and sent to the customer.

Managed Business Continuity

The Extraordinary Managed Business Continuity service ensures that your business can continue operating in the event of a serious disruption to your primary hosting facility.

Service continuity is achieved through replicating your data to a second datacentre facility. The data replicated may include web applications, databases, storage or entire virtual machines.

The second datacentre facility is completely independent of your primary facility, guaranteeing that service-affecting issues will not impact both sites.

Data replication is monitored on a 24/7 basis. In the event of a failure to replicate data an Extraordinary engineer will intervene, investigate and recover service.

The business continuity service is periodically tested through simulated failure events. During these events we make sure that the data is fully replicated, available for restore and is available for service recovery in a timely manner.

As each Private Cloud business continuity solution is tailored to the customer, testing can be done in a sandboxed environment, not causing disruption to your live services or other customers.

Continuous data replication

Continuous data replication is achieved using Veeam Backup and Replication or Azure Site Recovery. Our managed continuous data replication service is monitored by our team of engineers on a 24/7 basis. Engineers make sure your data is consistently replicated and continuously available for restore or failover. Replicated data is frequently tested in sandboxed environments, giving you the assurance that if disaster strikes you will be protected.

Offsite data backup and replication

Offsite backup is available as a service in any of our three UK datacentres, as well as the Azure Cloud using Azure Backup and Azure Recovery Services. Backups are managed by our engineering team. Any backup failures or slow downs generates an alert which is immediately investigated. Backup reports are provided to you on a daily basis giving you a full and transparent view of your backup health.

Our Technologies

Microsoft Data Protection Manager

DPM provides a centralised backup system for Microsoft workloads, servers, and client computers. DPM can be used to back up multiple Microsoft workloads across the enterprise using a single point of management. Data can be backed up to disk, tape, and to the Azure Cloud using Windows Azure Backup.

Backup Medium

Description

Disk-to-tape backup (D2T)

Back up data directly to tape, which is stored offsite

Disk-to-disk-to-tape backup (D2D2T)

Backup data to disk in the short term and tape in the long term

Disk-to-tape backup (D2T) + Windows Azure Backup

Back up data to disk and Windows Azure in the short term and to tape in the long term

Disk-to-disk backup (D2D) + Windows Azure Backup

Back up data to disk, or to disk and Windows Azure. May be used as short or long term storage

Azure Backup

When you backup or restore data to and from Microsoft Azure Backup service you can simply select the files and folders that are to be backed up or those that need to be restored. Microsoft Azure Backup delivers business continuity benefits by providing a backup solution that requires no initial hardware costs other than a fast connection from the datacentre to the Azure Cloud.

Reliable offsite data protection
Backups are encrypted before transmission and stored encrypted in Azure. These backups are off-site, safely away from your datacentre, protected by reliable Azure storage, reducing the need to secure and protect on-site backup media.

A simple and integrated solution
Manage cloud backups from the familiar backup tools in Windows Server, Windows Server Essentials, or System Center Data Protection Manager. These tools provide similar experiences configuring, monitoring, and recovering backups whether to local disk or Azure storage. Or you can use the agent software itself. After data is backed up to the cloud, authorised users can easily recover backups to any server.

Efficient and flexible backup and recovery
With incremental backups, only changes to files are transferred to the cloud. This helps ensure efficient use of storage and reduced bandwidth consumption, while enabling point-in-time recovery of multiple versions of the data. Configurable data retention policies, data compression, and data transfer throttling offer added flexibility and help boost efficiency.

Veeam Backup & Replication

Agentless
Physical backup tools add unnecessary complexity through the use of agents in VMs. This makes backups a hassle and puts your critical VMs at risk. Veeam Backup & Replication provides application-aware backup and recovery as well as granular and in-place restore — all without agents.

Best support for Hyper-V
Leading support for Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V, including built-in deduplication, compression and true incremental backup, as well as support for 64TB VHDX and VMs on SMB 3.0 storage.

Virtualisation-Powered Data Protection
Instead of merely tolerating the virtual environment, Veeam leverages it to provide the most comprehensive protection for your virtual infrastructure.

Image-based backup and recovery
Image-based backup enables faster and more reliable VM recovery, while Instant File-Level Recovery can quickly recover an individual file directly from an image-based backup regardless of operating system or file system.

2-in-1: backup and replication
Backup all of your VMs as often as you like and replicate them on site for high availability or off site for disaster recovery; failover and failback included for near-continuous data protection (near-CDP) for any virtualised application.

vPower®
Patented technology that runs a VM directly from a compressed and deduplicated backup file on regular backup storage.

Virtual Lab
Automatically create an isolated, protected environment for performing application-item recovery, validating VM backups, and testing, training and troubleshooting without affecting your production environment.
